January Construction Update

Welcome back to the start of a new semester. I hope you had a restful break and are off to a great start. The teams within the Office of Campus Planning, Design and Construction (CPDC) were busy with projects over the break, and new projects are beginning as we plan out this new year.

Here are many of the projects that are occurring across campus and others that are in the works:

Campus Accessibility Improvements: Door operators are being installed in multiple locations at the Dome. Gates A and C will be complete by the end of January. Gate M will be complete in mid-February, and gates G and N will be complete by the end of February.

National Veterans Resource Center (NVRC): Structural steel installation has made significant progress in the past month. The structural steel work will continue into February. Site utility work will continue through the winter months. The project is on schedule for a January 2020 opening. Pedestrians and drivers are reminded to follow the signs in the area of construction. A single lane of traffic will remain along South Crouse Avenue from Waverly Avenue to Marshall Street through spring 2019. You can monitor the progress at the NVRC website.

Lyman Hall Lecture Hall Renovation: The design is complete for renovations to the tiered lecture space in Lyman room 132. The renovation will include all new finishes, new seating and a new AV system. Construction will begin in May and be complete in August for the Fall 2019 semester.

DellPlain Hall Student Room Renovation: The design for student room renovation is complete. This two-phase project will include new room layouts, new furniture, flooring and other finishes. The first phase is scheduled to be constructed in the summer of 2019 and will include student room renovations on the floors 6, 7 and 8 and updates to the first-floor lounges.

Day Hall Student Room Renovations: Construction of this multiphase renovation project will continue next summer with additional student room renovations and renovations to the student lounges on the first floor. Summer 2019 construction will be the final phase of this project. Upon completion this three-phase project will provide students with updated single-user accessible restrooms throughout the building, renovated student rooms on all floors and an updated lounge on the first floor.

Schine Student Center Renovation: The Schine Student Center will soon undergo a significant makeover. The renovation, identified as a key component of the Campus Framework, will begin in May 2019. The project will enhance the student experience by creating new gathering spaces, improved facilities for student services and a new dining experience. Read more about the project on the SU News website.

Center for Undergraduate Research in Bird Library: Construction of a new Center for Undergraduate Research on the second floor of Bird Library is complete. Located adjacent to rooms 230 and 231, the new space will serve as an entry point for undergraduate research and foster collaboration between faculty and students to expand undergraduate research opportunities. The new center is ready for use.

Bird Library Suite 550: Construction is nearing completion for improvements to suite 550 in Bird Library to provide space for the LGBT Resource Center, Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Disability Cultural Center. These organizations will be temporarily relocated to this location during the renovation of the Schine Student Center. The LGBT Resource Center is scheduled to relocate to Bird Library Suite 550 on Feb. 1, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Disability Cultural Center will relocate after Commencement in May 2019.

Center for Science and Technology (CST) Third and Fourth Floor Labs: Construction is underway for renovations to four labs in CST. These lab spaces are scheduled to be complete early in the spring semester.

Campus Wayfinding and Building Signage: A working group consisting of University representatives led by CPDC is overseeing a phased Campus Signage and Wayfinding project. This project includes digital wayfinding, arrival signage to identify campus gateway entrances, interior and exterior signage, and donor recognition signage. Signs recently installed on Waverly and University avenues will improve visibility and wayfinding for campus visitors to the Office of Admissions in Crouse-Hinds Hall.

Archbold Gymnasium: Pouring of the concrete foundation walls of Building C is nearing completion. The foundation walls for the pool have been poured and can be seen from the construction webcam. Construction is 75 percent complete in the north portion of the facility (Building A). Mechanical and electrical work is ongoing on the lower level of Building B. Steel is being erected in Building B.

Crouse College and Shaffer Art Building: The construction of two new all-gender, accessible restrooms began during the semester break. These new restroom facilities will be located on the first floor of each building. Construction is scheduled to be complete in early February.

Hendricks Chapel: A significant amount of scaffolding was erected during winter break to complete work in the upper area of the chapel dome and balconies. In the past two weeks the scaffolding has been removed. The chapel has received a final cleaning to host events this semester. The final step in this project will be to install the air handlers during spring break. These HVAC improvements include the addition of air conditioning to the chapel and are scheduled to be complete by May for Commencement events in the chapel.
