Construction During Thanksgiving Break

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

With Thanksgiving break nearly upon our campus, I wanted to let you know about some winter preparations and projects that will be taking place on or near the Einhorn Family Walk, formerly the University Place Promenade. All work will be performed and completed by Nov. 28 when classes resume.

A summary of projects includes:

  • Gate Improvement Conduits: The existing gate on University Place adjacent to Irving Avenue will be updated for automation to improve emergency access. The emergency power will be provided from Newhouse 3 and controls will be provided from Crouse Hinds Hall. The conduit systems will be installed through trenchless technology methods over Thanksgiving break. There will be seven days of trenchless work starting on Nov. 18. This will include limited excavations at the pipe entry/exit points. In addition, there will also be excavations adjacent to the buildings for pipe entry. The remaining gate equipment will be installed upon delivery in January 2017.
  • Handrail Work: Additional handrails will be installed along the eastern Place of Remembrance ramp and the old handrails at Bird Library will be replaced. The foundations for the Place of Remembrance ramp railings will take three days to establish, with railings to follow in December.
  • Monument Fire Lane Work: Work will be taking place from Nov. 17-27 at the monuments south of Bird Library in order to improve grading for Syracuse City Fire and Emergency vehicle access. This will allow vehicles to traverse from the Q2 parking area to the Einhorn Family Walk in emergency situations. The area will be fenced off during construction and the walk between the monuments will not be open.
  • Snowmelt Work: There will be work occurring within the Newhouse School and Schine Student Center to establish snowmelt mechanical systems. While the project will primarily occur within the mechanical rooms, there will be a three-day excavation required for the southwest grassy area of Schine to bring piping into the building. This area will be fenced off, but will not impact access to Schine. These systems will come online over the winter break.
