February Construction Update

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

As we continue to work on large construction projects during these winter months, we’re planning for some exciting work to begin after Commencement. In May, renovations to the Schine Student Center will start, and the first phase of student room renovations at DellPlain Hall and the final phase of student room renovations at Day Hall will begin. Throughout the spring and summer, you will see the Barnes Center at The Arch take greater shape in anticipation of the fall 2019 opening. These projects are essential elements of the Campus Framework that are helping to reshape our campus to enhance the student experience and create greater accessibility to student spaces.

To learn more about these and other projects, campus community members can attend any of three Campus Construction Update Town Hall Meetings this spring. The meetings will be held March 5 and 21 and April 11. Visit the SU News story for more details.

Here’s a look at some of the active construction projects on campus:

Archbold Gymnasium/Barnes Center at The Arch: Pouring of the concrete foundation walls is nearing completion and steel is being installed in Building C. The foundation walls for the pool have been poured. Construction is 75 percent complete in the north portion of the facility (Building A). Mechanical and electrical work is ongoing on the lower level of Building B. The project can be seen from the construction webcam.

Bird Library Suite 548: Construction is complete. The LGBT Resource Center has relocated to Suite 548. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Disability Cultural Center will relocate in May. These organizations will be temporarily relocated to this location during the Schine Student Center renovation.

Campus Wayfinding and Building Signage: A working group consisting of University representatives is overseeing a phased Campus Signage and Wayfinding project. This project includes digital wayfinding, arrival signage to identify campus gateway entrances, interior and exterior signage, and donor recognition signage. Students, faculty, staff and visitors will begin to see new parking lot signs installed this spring.

Center for Science and Technology (CST) Third and Fourth Floor Labs: Construction is underway for renovations to four labs in CST. These lab spaces are scheduled to be complete this semester.

Crouse College and Shaffer Art Building: The construction of two new all-gender, accessible restrooms will be complete this week. These new restroom facilities are located on the first floor of each building. Combined with the Physics Building project, this brings the total number of all-gender accessible restrooms on campus to 99.

Day Hall Student Room Renovations: Construction of this multiphase renovation project will continue this summer with additional student room renovations and renovations to the student lounges on the first floor. Summer 2019 construction will be the final phase of this project. Upon completion, this three-phase project will provide students with updated single-user accessible restrooms throughout the building, renovated student rooms on all floors and an updated lounge on the first floor.

DellPlain Hall Student Room Renovation: The design for student room renovation is complete. This two-phase project will include new room layouts, furniture, flooring and other finishes. The first phase is scheduled for construction this summer and will include student room renovations on floors 6, 7 and 8 and updates to the first-floor lounges.

Dineen Hall Fourth Floor Renovations: Construction will commence in March for a new office suite on the fourth floor. The Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) is scheduled to relocate from Crouse-Hinds Hall to the fourth floor of Dineen Hall by the end of the spring semester. This new location will foster greater collaboration between the College of Law and BBI.

Hendricks Chapel: The contractor is preparing for the final step of the project to install the air handlers during spring break. These HVAC improvements include the addition of air conditioning to the chapel and are scheduled for completion by May for Commencement events in the chapel.

Hinds Hall ICE Box: The final design of a new space in Hinds Hall will be complete in March, with construction to begin this summer. This project will create an additional 1,000 square feet of flexible program space on the second floor to support innovation, collaboration and entrepreneurship. Construction will be complete in late fall 2019.

Lyman Hall Lecture Hall Renovation: The design is complete for renovations to the tiered lecture space in Lyman Room 132. The renovation will include all new finishes, new seating and a new AV system. Construction will begin in May and will be complete in August for the fall semester.

National Veterans Resource Center (NVRC): Structural steel installation will be complete this week. In the coming weeks, the contractor will begin to pour the concrete floor slabs as the weather permits. Site utility work will continue through the winter months. The project is on schedule for a January 2020 opening. Pedestrians and drivers are reminded to follow the signs in the area of construction. A single lane of traffic will remain along South Crouse Avenue from Waverly Avenue to Marshall Street through this spring. You can monitor the progress at the NVRC website.

Physics Building: The construction of a new all-gender accessible restroom will be complete this week. The new restroom is located in the sub-basement adjacent to the passenger elevator.

Schine Student Center Renovation: The Schine Student Center will soon undergo a significant makeover. The renovation, identified as a key component of the Campus Framework, will begin in May. The project will enhance the student experience by creating new gathering spaces, improved facilities for student services and a new dining experience. Read more about the project on the SU News website.

Shaffer Art Building Glass Block Façade: The existing glass block façade along the west side of the building is scheduled to be replaced this summer. The construction drawings are complete, and the proposed work is out to bid. Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-May.

Utility Work:

·         During spring break, utility work will occur on an existing chilled water main in the lawn area in front of Smith Hall. The work will be complete and the area restored by the end of spring break.

·         A chilled water main to serve the Barnes Center at The Arch project will be installed March 5 through April 5. The pedestrian pathways adjacent to the Dome and the Barnes Center at The Arch will be impacted.

·         Water main work will be performed on the west side of Carnegie during spring break, requiring closure of the existing sidewalk.

·         Please pay attention to the pedestrian detours noted and follow the directional signs.
