Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:
In two weeks, first-year and transfer students will arrive on campus, marking the beginning of their academic careers at Syracuse University. Shortly after, the remainder of students will return ready to start another great year. When they arrive on campus, our facilities will be ready to greet them with countless improvements, both large and small. You, and they, will likely notice improvements made over the 14-week construction season in our residence halls, classrooms and other facilities.
My colleagues and I continue to work on a number of important projects, including the following:
- Carnegie Library: The work includes the conversion of the heating system from steam to a hot water system and creation of two student group study rooms. Work will continue, in mostly mechanical spaces, into the fall. Completion of work this fall will allow the new, much more comfortable, heating and cooling system to be operational for winter.
- Center for Science and Technology Roof Replacement: All roofing membrane work is complete, and work is underway on metal flashing and railings. The work will be finalized, and the crane will be gone from campus prior to the return of students.
- Classroom Upgrades: Renovations of six classrooms in the Hall of Languages and three classrooms in Link Hall and the Center for Science and Technology are nearing completion, and will be finished by the end of next week. Additionally, the upgrades of seating, carpeting and window treatments in Watson Theater will wrap up next week as well.
- Crouse College: Masonry repairs and restoration of the demi-domes continue to progress well, and the work is expected to continue into the fall. We will continue to update you on the progress.
- Einhorn Family Walk Seating: The installation of the new seating is underway, and will be complete by Aug. 23.
- Hendricks Chapel Stair Replacement: Granite treads are being set now. The whole project, including plaza drainage improvements, will be complete in the first week of October. You may notice the fence around the chapel steps will be removed this weekend. We have made arrangements to allow for the steps to be used for an alumni couple’s wedding ceremony prior to final completion of the project. The fence will be put back in place, and work will resume immediately after the wedding.
- Residence Hall Improvements: All work in DellPlain, Day and Haven halls will be completed in the next few days, and they will be ready to receive students with numerous renovated restrooms and improved student rooms.
- Waverly Avenue Utilities: All underground utility work is complete, and site restoration is well underway. The final concrete road base will be placed this week, and paving will begin later this week and continue into next week. The work is on schedule, and the road is expected to be reopened on Aug. 18.
